CONCEPT

The Only Three was asked to design and create a direct mailer for the iconic Japanese department store Takashimaya in Singapore, under the concept of a “handbook”. The direct mailer is often not interpreted as a personalised, uniquely designed product, so we were tasked with a unique and inspiring challenge.

The concept derived from a series of inspirations; from Lunar New Year, the Spring Festival to Takashimaya’s 26th Anniversary.

The Only Three drew from Japanese inspired culture and symbols, such as the Sakura flower and kimono dresses to enhance the theme and pay homage to Takashimaya’s Japanese roots. From there, the journey inspired by intricate Japanese craftsmanship and traditions unforgotten took on a life of its own, and evolved into a beautifully designed, carefully curated product for Takashimaya customers in Singapore.

PRODUCT

The final product was the handbook, ready to be mailed to Takashimaya customers. The design was a fusion of colorful heritage and contemporary, with inspiration drawn by classic Japanese elements and symbols. Coated in bright and striking colour palettes, each page is an artwork of its own.

The key visuals of the handbook were expressed in illustrations, with special hand drawn characters, a testament to Japanese crafts.

The design of the book was printed using coated paper, with a smooth and glossy finish. The decision to use this was drawn from traditional Japanese handcrafted paper. Inside the book, papers used were also eco-friendly and bio-degradable.

The Only Three was responsible for creating the product from start to finish, from seeking inspiration for the concept, to putting the final finishes on the handbook.

CONCEPT & PRODUCT

The Only Three was also tasked with designing and creating gifts for Takashimaya clients in Singapore, with the inspiration being a delicate, personalized twist on everyday essential items, with a touch of special attention and care. The Only Three was involved in this project from ideation, to conception and production.

The special item evolved to become a hand sanitizer bag, made with soft leather and a leather pouch of the same treatment. The overall design is compact, functional yet stylish and contemporary, making it ideal as an accessory for the department store’s stylish clientele, and a much-used item in today’s post-pandemic world.
